In a study published in The Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, researchers found that well-being in the workplace was associated with better job performance. The study looked at 1,820 participants in the Canadian National Population Health Survey, who filled out a survey asking about their quality of life. They were then followed for a year and asked to complete a series of tasks that measured their job-related performance. Those who reported having had poor quality of life were significantly more likely to report working below their skill level, taking longer to complete the tasks, and performing worse on several measures of job performance.
And it wasn’t because they were less motivated. When the researchers separated the findings by race and gender, they found that women who reported having had poor quality of life were significantly more likely to report working below their skill level than men who did.
